LOGBOOK PART 1 - Trieste to Barcelona - Skipper Christopher Weiss

DATE 27 July/2011
POSITION Barcelona/Hamburg/Spain

CREW Christopher&Karoline

So! Wir sind wieder in Hamburg sicher gelandet.

Was ist passiert?

Gesegelte Meilen: 2040sm
Tage: 70
Davon Regen am Tag (wenig Regen!): 6 Tage
Bedeckte Tage: ca. 15
Schwimmwestentage: 6
Verbrauchtes Benzin: 290Liter
Stärktster Gesegelter Wind: 9,5BFT (ca. 45kn, 23m/s, 83km/h)
Schnellste gemessene Geschwindigkeit: 13,5kn
Schnellste über eine Minute gesegelte Geschwindigkeit: 10kn
Grundberührungen: 1
Man über Bord: 0 (außer sehr viele beim Baden :D)
Verletzungen: 0
Überfälle: 0
Diebstahl: 0

PS: Hey Lampentier! Sponserst du auch die Crew?!

At last! Safely back in Hamburg.

What happened?

Of course we did some thorough sightseeing in Barcelona. a facinatıng city and kind to us by providing not to hot weather. I think the pictures are telling it.
Our engine problem turned out to be a faulty oil pressure lamp (but I do believe, there was a lack of oil too, as I heard a metallic sound). But Karo was fabulous ın helping to solve the problem as she speaks very good Spanısh. Today the mechanic ınstalled the part, which he had luckily on stock.

The handover to Peter & Beatrice was excitıng to us and, we felt the paın of seperation ...after 2.5 months.
She has been my home and that better than any hotel room! At night I will miss her gentle swaying ın a calm anchor bay.
But it is ok that someone else finishes the job of gettıng her safely to Hamburg.

Time for a little summary:

Saıled dıstance: 2040sm
Days: 70
Of which rain during daylight (little rain!): 6 Days
Overcast days: about 15
Life vest days: 6
Fuel consumed: 290Liters
Strongest wınd encountered at sea: 9,5BFT (ca. 45kn, 23m/s, 83km/h)
Hıghest boatspeed: 13,5kn
Fastest sustaıned boatspeed over a mınute: 10kn
Groundıngs: 1
Man over board: 0 (Apart from the many occassıons when swımmıng :D)
Accıdents: 0
Robberıes: 0
Thefts: 0

It´s been the best summer for us!

Regarding crıme, we had no trouble at all and encountered only friendly and welcoming people. A big surprise though on the last day in Hamburg!

We had already arrived at home when I noticed that my laptop bag and its content were amiss! I was 100% certain to have taken it of the plane. Solution - it must be on the trolley leading to the baggage claim ın terminal 2!!! All pictures.....grrrrrrr

I called lost& found instantly and, surprise surprise, someone had already passed it on to them, without beeing aware of all the millions (of memories) inside.

At last I`d like to wish Peter an equally sucessful trip and look forward to read a short logbook entry or position indication from time to time.

We wıll see again ın Hamburg, Aquaris!!!

Byyyyyyyeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!

Ps.: Lampentıer, are you also sponserıng the crew ;-)  ?

Ok, time to deal with the backlog :-)

At fırst, Barcelona rocks!! Amazing old town, just pretty awesome houses. One tends to walk & walk & walk more though. But more on that tommorow.

We stopped our log following the stormy ride close to Cape Bear where we ended up alongside the 8m sailboat of a french couple on holidays. Really nice, we had wıne wıth them ın the evening and it was a pleasure to talk French for once after all that English and German-English we had been accustomed to previously.

Next mornıng they even offered choclate croıssants to us!!

We spent the whole day waiting at 6Bft and moved on to Cap Creus only ın the late afternoon as the wind was supposed to reduce. Matching the forecast we left at 17:00hours only to find ourselves becalmed shortly later. Guess we were too patient. Still we remember yesterdays storm vividly and the waves were still around too.

At Cap Creus we found a nice bay close to Cadaques where we moored ourselves with 3 landlines. Anchoring seems problematic due to the seaweed on the bottom. Some german sailors found that out for us so we did not bother with the anchor. At night we had a wonderful starlit sky and bioluminecent sea all topped by a beautyful moon.
The next morning the beaches filled up quickly. So did the bay and the Spanish powerboaters were crossed with those stupid Germans blocking the bay wıth their spiderweb of mooring ropes. When they started to talk about the police we made a bee line towards a neighbouring bay. Anchor ground was much better and this turned out to be good, as we had a lot of wind that night. We took the dinghy to town and enjoyed tapas a little later.

Next day we had fair wınds taking us towards Barcelona. Still also theses favourable wınds ended ın a calm. Strange weather with rotating winds. The last night at sea we spent in a beautyful bay close to Lloret del Mar.

The remaining 43nm to Barca we could partially sail wıth good winds, but still needed the help of our trusty companion, the outboard, from time to time.

500m from port we were greeted wıth strong wınds and waves on the nose. When we switched to engine power İ noticed a metallic sound. The oil pressure light showed also that there is no oil pressure. Bad signs whıch can lead to a jammed piston which is almost unrepairable. Luckily we managed to sail into port and could use the dinghy outboard for the port manouvers. Still the dinghy outboard stopped 5m from the pontoon... tough luck ın the last second.

Still we made it with a bit of fortune and are now trying to fınd a mechanic to fix the engine. Of course it is saturday afternoon & monday is a bank holiday....

Chris and Karo have safely reached Barcelona! The last few days they were offline because they do not have a spanish phonecard.

Great the arrived! Horray, thank you (!!!) and congratulations!

Unfortunately the've got grief with the Honda outboard. The oli pressure has a problem. Might be the oil pump.

We try to source a good, priceworth & reliable service mechanic who can fix it until Wedbesday. Can anyone help? Wednesday the trip should continue with a new crew...

Genua langsam kleiner werdend. Regen

9:30Uhr: Sturmfock und Groß mit 4 Reffs. See angenehm (schätzungsweise 0,5-1m aber von hinten also kein Problem)

Speed machmal 13kn. Geschätzte Windgeschwindigkeit: 6Bft in Böen 7BFT.

Wingeschwindigkeit: 7Bft in Böen 8.

Add on to yesterday: We met the Tour de France a la voile! As we arrived on scene a german boat had a false start…

6:30a.m. Early rise. Lots of swell from last night against us.

Wind is pleasurable 5Bft (Main with 4 reefs and the genoa).

9.00a.m. Great progress, meantime only 3Bft (for about 10min…) Speed between 6.5 and 8.3kn. Reducing the genoa step by step. Rain

9:30a.m.Stormjib and main with 4 reefs. Seastate decent (about 0,5-1m from behind-no problem.)

10:00a.m. We take the main completely in, amazingly surfing down the waves (To Franzi no digging in of the bows!!). Speed occasionally 13kn. Windspeed 6Bft, gusting 7Bft.

10:30a.m. Wind and waves are growing, Cape Bear visible according to windfinder we should have gusts around 5-6Bft at 11.00a.m.. See pix. Actually we have 7Bft gusting 8Bft. Waves 3m sometimes breaking. No waves entering the cockpit but one is advised to not turn the head aft ;-) The stormjib halyard is loose we wrapped it up and are running essentially under bare poles.

11:00a.m. Cape Bear!! 4m waves (Higher than the windgen (!). Speed 6-7kn. Aquaris is tracking well and brings us safely behind the cape.

12:00-12:30p.m. Entering port and mooring. We sail downwind into port and a can hardly stop in time (Careful Peter!-The next skipper). The outboard tends to aerate.

Now we are safely in port alongside of a friendly Frenchman.

DATE 18 July/2011
POSITION Port La Nouvelle/France

CREW Christopher&Karoline

Wirklich nette Leute hier in Frankreich!

Sailing towards the cape was good but the closer we got the higher the waves were getting. This is due to the longer fetch. Several times we tacked to get closer to shore where we found less waves and more comfortable conditions.

But the wind increased steadily and in gusts we must have had about 6 Bft. We put all 4 reefs into the main and unpacked the storm jib. Unfortunately we do not have a good uowind performance with this set-up and had to switch back to the genoa occassionally.

Now we are in our destination port Port de la Nouvelle snug against the harbour wall. On return from our run for groceries I find that the dirty prints of someone elses shoes where on board-not a pleasant experience, but everything is still on board (of course the boat was locked!).

Shortly later we are visted by a man in uniform. He was very friendly and spoke even good German. At first he said that we could not stay. "An oil tanker is leaving soon, last year we had a catamaran which was squashed & destroyed by a leaving freighter".

As we told him that our plan was to leave before 6a.m. tommorow we were free to stay. We found out later that the man had lived in Bavaria due to an old love affair. In his charming french tinted German he said that he is never gonna forget her.  He asked us if we had bought some wine in the region, it would be fabulous.

We told him: "Not yet".

Ravoli are boiling.

That very moment he returns to the boat in his Renault Clio. In his hand a bottle of wine & a new bottle opener.

This way we enjoyed the food even more. Really friendly welcoming people here in France!

Whenever a big ship is entering or leaving port we have to leave the boat due to the risk of beeing squashed though. We found out though that the ship from last year had a damaged rudder...

Tommorow around 11a.m. they will have a force 9 (!!!) blowing here, while we are hopefully already in Spain by than.

So please do not feel alarmed if you do not hear from us. We may be in a secluded anchor bay without web access (no spanish card yet!).

THE RACE!

Holland frei geben.

Achja: Zum Schluss noch Gewichteheben.

The Race!“

Lets start towards the end of the day with our report. Short from Sete, to be more precise directly at Frontignan we where passed by the trimaran seen on our pictures. They had a reef in their main, and i said to Karo „aren't we supposed to race them?!“

Just seconds later the tack onto our course. Just 20m between us.

Racestart! The wind was just right, coastal wind, veering lightly, just as on the Hamburg Alster, couch sailing weather. The distance did not change to my surprise. I anticipated them to be faster, as the Dragonfly had better, fully battend sails.

I steered out every little header something they did not do. They did scream and shout for a race though before.

Due to the fine adjustment we gain few meters on them. Unfortunately I had to clear the water bottle from the cockpit & they used the header used by myself due to this.

We are on a par again.

Clearly the port entrance of Sete was the finishing line. 7,5kn and the race continues. They shed their reef and should have been faster. Younger lighter boat with better sails. Still at the port entrance we where still ahead and the tacked away (looks like they where destined to Frontignan. I grabed the horn to signal our finish. Race won ;-)

Close to finish it got closer, but Aquaris showed her pedigree. Respect!

This morning:

Went shopping in Camargue, washed the boat, had a decent breakfast and headed into the short steep waves. The harbourmaster suggested to stay close to shore. We tried to follow that advice. The waves where so short & rough that the leeward ama was burried often. Quite unpleasant when you hit these waves at full speed (6.5kn-7.0kn).

On the trip down to here we surpassed a small 33footer completly. Either he could not sail or was afraid to go hard to windward. In any case his tacking was much worse than Aquaris. Bit surprising.

But as already mentioned, after a while we got lots of gusty wind and hardly any waves. 8Kn nonstop. Average 6.6kn!

Regarding Sete: Wonderful and completly different to the other small french villages. A mix of wonderful old buildings with pretty balustrades & railings, green parks & lots of canals which reach all the way to Holland.

Oh, and at last, weight lifting. See pix ;-)

Toller Tag!

Great day! Little wind until the bay of Fos-sur-Mer. Than a steady southern wind settles in (max force 4). This made us move a little more than the intendet port for today. Instead of St. Marie de la Mer we head for Port Camarque.

If you are offered 7kn on abeam reach, you do not give that a miss, especially if the wind is supposed to turn on the nose by tommorow.

The fireworks were fab!

Today we head once more into town for "shopping" (my girlfriend Karo) and groceries (myself Christopher). Both is called shopping generically but actually it is not quite the same, is it?

Unfortunately I can not find a better outboard bracket than the old one with the widened holes. I'll try to fix it. Luckily we have an electric drill, but the wooden drill bit does not really help to progress when one drills in aluminum (no 12mm drill for metal on board..).

Four hours later we have the Honda back on our renewed old bracket which has no newly lined bearing holes.

Looks much better than the newly bought  bracket which twists and shouts when the 10hp engine sits on it (it is supposed to be for a 24hp engine according to the dealer!!)

All is working great for now, the engine behaves like it is REALLY attached to the boat now. No play even when in reverse gear.

One more thing was important for our minds today. Leave the safety harbour & head on. We are now in Niolon 5.5km , west of Marseille. A really pleasant spot. See pix.

Today is the french national holiday.

Storm! The night was really loud and wind and waves are stressing every rope. One can hardly believe what a havoc 7Bft can create.

It sounds like a concert. Anchor chain (=Base), shrouds (=Soprane), Waves /=SchtSchtScht), Windfried (=which is the nickname for our wind generator resulting from the name of Siegfried who installed it and the word "Wind". Sometimes we call it Speedfried too.) last participant is the broken wind instrument in the mast top (Grrrr).

To keep us amused we get a salty shower from the spray which the wind drives over the harbour wall every few minutes.

What I forgot, was that our dinghy provides the drums when it hits the hull. But we are fine & so is the boat. I anticipate that we have to wait for this to calm down at least until saturday .

So: Update!

Wir sind in Marseille. Seid gestern.

Also raus vor Anker. Wurde teilweise ungemütlich - also zweiten Anker raus. Außerdem will natürlich hier keiner Geld.

At last: Update!

We are in Marseille. Since yesterday already. Following an intoxicating beam reach around the islands we dropped our hook behind the island called Frioul and went for a swim.

Right after we continued to the old port of Marseille -wunderful, but overcrowded. There is not really enough space for Aquaris, some areas with in the port are forbidden due to tommorows fireworks display. On the 14th (French National Holiday!) they even close the access to the port between 13:00 and 23:00. No access at all-for noone! As we hear that they want to charge the mooring by length x breadth we choose another option. It would be to expensive for Aquaris crew to stay for 3 nights, 'cause we want to experience the french national holiday here.

So lets go outside and anchor. Partially not really comfortable we even used the second anchor. This morning at 7.00a.m. we went into a small fishing port. Lots of ropes and anchor there too, but it's calm, free of charge and more relaxed to anticipate the 7Bft gusts here.

Fällt man, gehts direkt ins Wasser!!!

Die Fotos sagen den Rest.

We had a wonderful leg to La Ciotat and combined it with a stroll through town upon arrival. We walked from the old port to the very pretty old town.

After lunch we headed on to the bay of Cassis with its three narrow ravines on the west side. In the first one we are now anchored with four other sailing boats. The powerboaters have gone home by now, before it was jampacked and one could hardly enter the bay.. Holidays in France-one has to get to the moorings a little later.

By the way, this is a perfect spot for harness free freeclimbing, if you fall out of the wall  you fall directly into the sea. Perfect!

The pix are telling the story.

We were sailing on a reach for the whole day. Towards the end we entered our mooring bay with 7.6kn.

Than it was time for some DIY. We installed from 16-21:30 hours the new storm jib, replaced the anchor windlass switches and replaced the old outboard bracket. Hope the latter one works better than the old one.

For the first time Karo went with the dinghy to town all by her self-unfortunately she misjudget the depth at the jetty and the prop fouled the seabed. The connector pin broke, just as it was supposed to.  Luckily we had a suitable replacement and its all working again.

In St. Tropez gehts ja voll ab...

Offline-is the best description for the last few days.

Our parcel arrived a little later (24hours) then ourselves in Nice and we used the waiting time to pay a nice visit to Nice. The commuter train from Villefranche-sur-mer takes you to Nice in few minutes , despite the fact that it is overcrowded and very warm it is at least not smelly from sweat inside.

Nice is really lovely and full of people. Unfortunately we will miss the Jazz festival which starts on Friday.

Friday morning we get the message that the parcel has arrived! We took the boat and then the dinghy to town to get it. Up the hill is easy, downhill we are loaded with 32kg including two sixpacks of beer. Than full speed to St. Tropez (several minutes 8kn) with an average of 5.9kn.

We anchor right in front of the port, hundreds of other yachts are here too. The dinghy outboard gives us trouble, it will not start so we have to take it apart despite our "night in town" clothes. GRRRRRR...! The sparplug we bought new in Napoli is at fault. For what reason we do not know. We screwd in the old one and all is fine. Message to Sigi (our crew in Napoli): So it was not the spark plug down there after all..

St. Tropez is the place to be! Lots of filthy rich guys, even some from Hamburg. Some are heading from their yacht directly to their red Rolls-Royce convertible from Munich to get to dinner or the Dior party.

Looks like Dior has its own villa for entertainment. We noticed films beeing projected on a side of the building. What a party!

Ourselves went sailed all the way into the bay today to do a shopping tour. After lunch we continued to the Isles de Levant near Hyeres. Now we are at anchor in the national park and went for a hike up the mountain to enjoy the sunset from a different perspective.

Das war ein Tag:

Menton - Cap Martin - Monaco - Cap Ferret - Villefranche-sur-Mer

Highlight: Eine Yacht hatte beim ablegen mit ihrem Anker Probleme, also musste ein Taucher her.

Echt beeindruckend diese großen Yachten, fast alle made in Germany.

What a day:

Menton-Cap Martin-Monaco-Cap Ferrat-Villefranche sur Mer

Around lunch time we moored in Monaco until that moment we had good winds for sailing. While in Monaco temperatures inside rose to 31degree centicrade. We did not even fancy a walk...it has been just to hot.
Without a doubt, this port is one of the most interesting ones. Highlight: To see a yacht cast off  its lines to leave port, only to have to send a diver to it's fouled anchor shortly thereafter.

A little later Dilbar from Lürssen arrives and shows off a perfect mooring manouver with two anchors. The port was closed during this. Also for us.

Then we continued to Cap Ferrat, passing the yacht Octopus which had been built in Kiel. Really impressive these yachts, and, most of them are "Made in Germany".

I still had recollections to past holidays on the Rade de Villefranche, where we are anchored now.

I just did a snorkeling tour and we did a tour of the old town with live music and dancing. Really chilled & easy going ;-) The pix tell it almost alone.

P.s. We will buy a new (=French) internet card in Nice, here we have a free WLAN in the bay.

What a lovely day of sailing! Until Diano Marina (St. Bartholomeo al Mare) we had smooth sailing . Going upwind we could head already to our next port.

After lunch we went on a beat with 4Bft of wind heading for the anchorage S. Stefano al Mare. Usually the speedo indicates 7kn and the average of 5.7kn calculated on arrival makes this look right. Despite the not so decent beat we got on well along this beautiful coastline. We know also the Ligurian coast from its land side, as we spent several childhood holidays down there.

Now we are anchored behind the big seawall. All other boats are rolling, while we are only moving  gently up and down - the good sides of living on a trimaran.

Nun geht es nochmal nach Portofino rein.

Today was a holiday from the holidays, just as it is so beautiful around here we stayed. This morning we where alone in the bay, later we got about 50 neighbouring boats and yachts! (See pix!)

Portofino!!!

Was soll ich sagen.

Portofino!!!

What shall I say? It's a dream! Of course we did a circle of honour in the ports basin, showing off Aquaris!

To get a mooring spot is virtually impossibkle and as we found out a little later also extremly rough (waves& swell!).

Now we are anchored in a bay to the northeast and took the dinghy into town to see Portofino. Again we got greeted twice by marriage couples, one of the with a horse drawn carriage with white horses.

The port looks like in a movie-very spectacular. Once the tourists are gone its a relaxed place. The pictures should tell it all.

"Rising Sun" is anchored in front of us. What an impressive array of lights!

Good start into our day: With decent wind we sailed with a short beat into the bay of La Spezia. Unfortunately Karo served the bigger part of her breakfast to Neptune-very kind to him!

As we entered the bay we had a thunderstorm in our back and the wind picked up. Following a tack, we heard a BANG and noticed that the aft part of the portside sheet track has parted company from Aquaris ;-( luckily this is only the secondary sheeting point for the genoa.

It had been attached with a 6mmx30mm bolt and looks like the nut had loosened. Now there is a small hole & repairs are on the way.

Still, the bay where we are moored is lovely.

Later a large yacht appeared over the horizon, Northern Star, a Lürssen yacht. Now she is anchored in our bay too. The anchor had not dropped when they launched already the big tender (seemingly a Hinckley) via the starboard shelldoor and under the watchful eyes of their guests.

Sorry, got to run, the anchor is slipping we are drifting towards a sand bach!! We will head to the next bay-talk to you soon.

False alarm ;-) all is fine, the chain was only scraping over some rocks, producing an awkward noise around our bows.

We are wnderfully moored and will head to shore in a moment.

Hmm... were did I stop? Their tender went to shore, soon to be followed by the crew tender.

They also rigged the obligatory rope to the chain to reduce the noise from the chain an inflict  less damage to the seabed. Just as we do on Aquaris ;-)

RoMa (with a Newcruise Designed Interior, www.newcruise.de) and some other impressive yachts have arrived to in our bay.

Viareggio!

Viareggio, a yachtsmans dream!

But a first a short flashback to last night. It had gotten already dark when a RIB with blue flashing lights passed us at full speed and at close range. Big waves and not nice. When I poked my head out of the hatch I saw the big old rusty tanker (photo 1) docked close by and huge smoke clouds above.  There where several fire engines on land helping the cook to cool down his dinner....

Wind, weather, waves-a dream. Totally relaxed I entered Viareggio port and did a little sightseeing before mooring.

Clearly I had to repeat that with the dinghy to see all the interesting yards and boats produced here (Rossi Navi, Benetti, Codecasa and Overmarine to name but a few.).

For all guys at home working for Newcruise (www.newcruise.de) the new Rossi Navi (IMO 1011367) has a real interesting side platform solution to monitor anchoring manouvers. Apart from this I noticed that their garagefloor is a sealevel and has only a 500mm high coaming (Pix on request).

Once more I took the dinghy through beautiful canals and almost up to the train station. Even here they built fairly big yachts (25-30m) which get to the sea through turning bridges & canals...

This morning we headed with good wind and some reasonably high waves to Livorno. The closer we got the more the wind died down and turned into the usual program down here. Sun, sun, sun! In the cabin we have 30 degrees C.

The port is huge and a real treat - for a change a place where yachts are built and a lot of cruiseliners drop their anchor.

We are, of course, anchored in front of a rotating bridge. First time we dropped the hook inside a port. But hey it's free of charge and we have a dinghy.

The tour through the canals was wonderful. It reminds us to Venice. Siegfried leaves tonight towards Pisa airport, while I turn Aquaris bow towards Viareggio, where Karo will join the ride.

Elba!

Elba!

The shifty winds took us sucessfully to the bay of Azzuro! The bays name says it all: Steep rocks with seagulls crystal clear water with a visibility of more than 10m, snorkeling is a dream. We just took the dinghy to town for some groceries.

Lots of German tourists with their cars. Surprisingly the prices are decent nevertheless. This counts for restaurants as well as for fuel, which is 4 Cent cheaper than in Talamone where we last refuelled. Seems a bit odd..

Elba seems still a little hideaway waiting to be discovered by boat.

Little add on to yesterday. The port in Talamone is very shallow. We went in between the boats with hardly any speed and got stuck. Engine astern and a bit of wiggling got us free again. The diving inspection revealed no damages today. Pew!

(Oder einfacher: Schalter in Off Position)

After an early rise, we have very good sailing condition until close to Monte Argentario. At the cape we experience the wind turning and increasing to a good 4Bft which built up big waves in a snap.
This made the decision for a lunch break at anchor in combination with swimming, eating & chilling an easy one.

The waves looked better and we gave it another try.At the big cape we had real big waves against us and even with the engine we made no way ahead. Engine and mainsail is a good combination but we are really looking forward to the stormjib which we will get soon from Franzi.

After a while we could use our mainsail and the genoa.

Somehow we got around, even though the waves were impressive!

The sail to Talamone was a great one but with 7kn average on a beam reach the person to windward gets still pretty wet! Once we reached port we had a decent salt crust.

Btw.: At this speed our wind generator runs like he is willing to take of.. must be 30 Amps in the wires ;-) In the biggest gusts we switched it off. Just put a finger in ;-) snap snap snap... well, luckily it has got an off button too!

Today it was rather uneventful. The wind was supposed to be good (4Bft) and should turn to West by midday. We wanted to use this to sail 62nm and sailed offshore in the morning to get a good angle to the wind after the predicted windshift.

Unfortunately the wind did not shift and reduced to a force 2 with reasonably big waves.

So we had to abandon our initial plan and headed to Civitavecchia after only 33nm, as there were no further harbours north of it.

Before the looong shopping stroll we painted the windgen pole, as rust comes at a flying  pace otherwise.

Also wirklich zu was gut!

We managed a fair ly large leg today. From morning to midday it was calm but but than we got moderate wind. The port of Rome is nice and not to expensive. Directly in front of the harbour entry we saw the megayacht "Dilbar" from Lürssen moored. Very impressive!

We got the Navtex installed and can now receive weather and warning notes.

Oh yes, and there was one more thing ;-)

We where both inside, the Autopilot was steering when we heard a loud bang. Could have been a log hitting the hull. Few moments later the same sound again. Than a kind of ambulance horn. Siegfried thought it was my laptop and I thought he was making jokes with his mobile phone.

But actually, as we poked our heads out of the cabin we realised that it was the Italian naval forces approaching us at full speed. They informed us that they were doing a shooting excersise.

Later we saw that info also on the newly installed Navtex.  So, this is surely a useful piece of equipment!

So Leute!

Gute N8t

Well guys! Knifes are for wimps ;-) We bought a kind of Kitchenaid for Zucchini and other veggies! Zip-zap, but careful otherwise the fingers are gone too.

The windgen has been mounted and wired up. Now we are eco-power users, officially!

We got up at 7 today and tried to find the "Lidl" supermarket 2miles behind the ugly housing estate which was visible on Google maps. But nothing, only a dead & quiet town of small holiday bungalows. Frustrating.

It took us about 12manhours to mount, install & test the windgen, and that despite beeing an electrician and a naval engineer. We did this while cruising. At first with 5kn under engine & then with 4Bft and all sails running max 7kn with a 1m wave.

Now the windgen is working nicely behind the bacxkstays with about 1800rpm charging at max. Ideal to slice veggies, or other things. See above.

The fuel we burnt so far is obviously nothing when balanced with our engineering costs.

As reward we reached a typical nice Italian holiday village with clean water & beaches. At around 19:00 hours we took a bath in the lukewarm water before heading to town for another pizza.

Morgen gehts schnell weiter.

Thanks for the seet mice (from the candy store)!!!

Now we are cheered up again: The parcel arrived today. The situation was as follows: In the morning er checked DHL tracking just to notice that the parcel had reached Italy. At about noon we noticed that it had been loaded into a delivery van.

So we strated our "run" to Louise Associates by Dinghy & yes, with it's engine. Up to the 3rd floor of the  impressive old mansion. Funny enough you have to pay 10ct for the lift.

The broker had once more many parcels on stock, but, not ours. They told us to pass by once again around 17:00hours. Having walked down the stairs (no change at hand) and heading for some shopping, I noticed out of the corner of my eye something yellow. YES, it was a white DHL van with a Yellow DHL sticker on it! Few minutes later we have the parcel in our hands!

Speaking fluently Angloitalian by now, we even managed to find a 48mm Dia staging pole to mount the windgen on.

Later the wind was so good that we managed to sail to a port 10nm from the Cape just north of Napoli. The "Port" is once more silted up, but the quay is still offering reasonable wave protection.

Looks like "Steilshoop" on the sea.

Tommorow we will press on quickly.

We're stuck! Well, we need to wait for a parcel from Franziska. The Italian DHL just does not seem to be quite as fast as the German one. The yacht service where our parcel will arrive is also dealing with the mail of the "big boys", such as the CMN Cloud 9. Lots of Megayachts here, Katana was here, the sailing yacht Red Dragon (really impressive!) and the new Feadship Siran, to name but a few...

Following yesterdays dinghy engine trouble we had to hunt for the right spark plugs today, which meant going ashore twice (& without engine). Having checked through the electrics too all is fine again. Horray!

It is about time that the windgen arrives (it's in our parcel), as the 100Ah battery is often completly empty due to the fact that we run the fridge from it.

We can charge with the generator but not fast enough to keep up with the fridge & on the buoy (40€ a night) there is no power cord...

So we enjoy the hummin'' sound of the genni again & have beans+potatoes+meat in our cassarole.

(Comment Franzi: I was really loughing to tears when I read this, as I thought the Autopilot drains the battery. I would never have run the fridge under sail my last boat never had one and i never felt I needed one. Guess that will be the first part of equipment I will get rid off when Aquaris is here. But hey, everyone has it's own priorities... and I hope you enjoy the cold beer!!! But no more comments on fuel costs please ;-)  )

We hope the parcel reaches us by tommorow as our timetable will get messed up otherwise (long daily trips...).

By the way, the pix show the first Wally I've seen in the water (Tuamata), the blue cave and due to some special requests from our readers: Chicas.

When the red sun settles in Capri... This morning we rounded Capri, wonderful caves and a lot of "traffic" in fron of THE blue one.

We anchored in port with a large number of megayachts and sunday sailors.

After lunch we motored with the dinghy to shore but the engine failed just short from the port entrance. We later found out onboard of the tri that the spark plug had failed. As the wind and waves had increased considerably we felt very lucky to get a tow back to the boat!
As the waves where still considerable in the evening we sailed on to Napoli.

A summer in Amalfi!

Well, for us irt has been (unfortunately) just one day.

4:30am. We leave Castellabate  early and it is the right decision - we are able to sail half of the way to Amalfi.

We are getting closer to the coast. Steep rocks with irokese haircut style shaped  houses on top. How does one get there? No idea, seems one has to be an avid rock climber. Amalfi appears perched into a ravoine & looks rather small. In front we see a lot of Megayachts at anchor. We drop our anchor just in front of a swimmers buoy line. Then we head to town with the dinghy. Fabulous narrow streets lots of art stores and tourist crap. All is completly crowded with people, as is the beach.

I guess the pix are telling it all.

The coastline of Amalfi is marvelous though! Amazing small chateaus pearched upon hills with very narrow paths leading to shore. We sail close to shore-up to 10m from land. Boatspeed in gusts about. 6.8kn.

Two bays from Positano we drop our anchor, already in the shade. The cliffs are towering for more than 400m above us.

There are a lot of boats moving around us and despite the lack of wind we have a lot of swell. A RIB approaches and offers a mooring buoy. When we ask carefully for the price, we get an ambitious 100€ as a reply. Guess we are in luxury country. But our own anchor is much cheaper.

By the way: One of the poweryacht ignored our right of way completely and just gave full speed in the last moment, creating a big wave which flooded our decks. Luckily no problem, as all hatches were kept closed. If this would not have been the case, you would not read this story!

At last we get to sail again today. We also ran the engine but only half day. Acciaroli is very pretty, even though we get to see a shipping accident later.

An, I'd guess about 64Foot, Sunseeker or s.th. similar has run on the cliffs of Cape di Licosa. We could see an elderly couple on deck, as well as several coast guard boats which gave horn signal as we approached from a distance.

Later they called a fishing boat in for the tow.

Now we are in Castellabate, enjoy a wonderful sunset and listen to some real good saxophone from a freestyle jazz band on the beach.

Puuuuhhhh - Motoren, Motoren, Motoren.

Sturmtage: Keine

Durchschnittstemperatur (geschätzt): 24°

Pünktlich erreichte Etappenziele mit Crewwechsel: Alle

Peeeewwwwhhh-Engine, engine, engine...

Unfortunately no wind at all today. As we have to press on, we need to run the engine.

Highlights: A flying fish (passing about 15m through the air) and a swordfish. The latter one jumped several times vertically out of the water and was about a meter long. Why he did this? We have no clue at all.

The coast is getting more pretty every day and latest in two days we should reach Amalfi.

Time for a little summary:

Sailed about 1005nm so far.

Rain: Only one day nonstop, apart from that occassionally an hour per day (apart from that only rain by night).

Storm: None!

 Average temperature (guessed): 24degrees centigrade

On time arrivals for crew changes: All ;-)

What happened today: No wind, only engine noise, shopping in Paola with the dinghy, nice port in Centraro just 16€ for water/power & shower. Almost unbelievable what we have or should have to pay occassionally.

Last night a Canadair practiced only about 100m from us the manouver to scoop up water. Very impressive!

Crew change: Simon has left, Siegfried is on board! We took the Dinghy through the old silted up harbour & tramped with luggage to the airport. They also have busses, but, apparently, not today.

At the airport I collected Siggi & we went back by taxi.

The following work has been completed. Rigging blocks got exchanged and the generator ventilation system got installed.

Recently in the marina: The dinghy engine did not start anymore ;-( probably it got to wet during our recent crossing.

Well after dismanteling it almost completly (Fuel system, spark plug....& much more) it is running again. Occassionally these daily chores need to be done too ;-(

Was ist heute passiert:

Flaute - Motoren - Tropea - Vibo Packet abholen - Lamezia

What we have been up to today:

No wind-motoring-Tropea-Collect parcel in Vibo-Lamezia

Tropea is very pretty but we only had time for a short lunch and headed on. In Vibo we received Franzi's equipment parcel. Quick and without problems! For the crew change we had to press on towards Lamezia though.

In the harbour handbook they show a port behind a sandbank.

The closer we get, the more we wonder-where is our harbour? Ah!!! A sailboats mast, that is probably it we also spot a small fishing boatwhich is somehow getting lost in the sand ;-) This must be the port entrance. We approached but the port entrance did not get larger.

Well in the end, it turns out that the entrance is 2m wide and 30cm deep (comment from your translator Franzi, Aquaris has 6.5m beam and draws about 60cm). The image shows me with the dinghy right in the entrance!!!

So what can get silted up in Italy WILL DEFINETLY be silted!!! So we had to do the crew transfer with the dinghy while we anchored right in front of the port entrance.

As anticapated, we spent an aweful night. The boat went up and down and left and right or back and forth- terrible! I believe to not have slept hardly at all. Only dozing. All this jerky pulls on the ropes.

(Comment from Franzi, try to attach a bridle line from the chain towards one bow, so that the boat gets pulled not directly from the front. That should soften the ride a bit.)

Having paid a visit to the Castello, we continued. We saw big waves but had only 4Bft of wind. Two reefs in the main and the jib get us with an average of 6.8kn towards the next port. No problems on a beam reach.

In Gioia Tauro we take cover behind a massive breakwater wall (Horray a calm night after all!!!!!) We are moored in the very small porto turistico of the “friends of pleasure boating”. We ask for the price and are offered a free berth with water and power after a short discussion. Amazing and VERY kind. THANK YOU!!! We just saw Formula one with our hosts.

Aber manchmal: Kochende See! Es spritzt und wir mitten durch! Einfach klasse.

What a day!

Sailing and sightseeing, conquered the straights of Messina.

At first Messina: Having cought up with our sleep deficit, we head for the town & its cathedral. A lot of old and pretty churches and a spectacular view onto the straits of Messina and city reward us. Close to our mooring we observe a lot of action. Optimist racing ;-)

At 15:30 we head out towards Scilla: Hardly any waves, all sails hoisted & 4Bft. The reward is a new top speed. 12.4kn!!! Not just for a second, but for over a minute. All on a beam reach. No current (which surprises a little).

Still, occasionally the sea looks like its boiling. We just speed through it. Excellent!

We observe a lot of swordfish hunters with their boats. All equipped with huge bowsprits (25m !) and tall masts (about 25m too). The masts are manned by up to 3 people the bowpole with the harpoon operator. When a gust hits they heel over considerabely.

Then Scilla: We reached it quick & the town is very Italian. Narrow streets on the hills and a great castle atop. All decorated even more by an impressive church.

In the evening we count up to 9 newly weds in port.

Unfortunately the port is not very calm, Looks like a rough night ahead.

1 st try to get to Messina

Start at 9:15 am. Biiiiiig waves and lots of water on deck shortly thereafter. Main with two reefs, foresail only partialy unfurled.

We tried to beat against it, but had to give up and head back to the buoy.

2nd try.

12:15.

The sea behind the Cape looks much better.

We start with the added power oft he engine. We are really a fair bit frustrated, as the winds are not supposed to change until Tuesday.

Engine power and everything runs nice. With full power we reach 4-5.5kn and just flatten the waves. They are not so disturbing any more soon we reach Reggio do Calabria.

Pew, how the weather can change in a few hours.

We continue our beat with 3 bft and no current bothering us anymore.

In Messina we head for the first available Marina. 75€ without power and water is not what we are after, so we choose a mooring buoy instead.

About 18:00 hours a big current sets. Hope we will not have that one against us tomorrow.

We fix the Problem!

Also eine "Bucht" gesucht.

We fixed the problem!

Good news from Mr. Honda. If someone does not get enough drinks he can not perform well.

While hunting for the bottleneck, I notice, following an almost complete disassembly of the fuel system, that the rubber fuelpump might be clogged up.

I push a screwdriver in and create a wonderful mess. Glad the big waves wash it away in no time.

At first the wind is blowing as forecasted. NNW. at full speed we beae down on Cape Sparivento.

After a little while we find ourselves reaching with 8kn under mainsail alone.

At the cape the wind shifts instantly on the nose.

We were progressing well nevertheless!

Behind the cape we sailed beautiful, but the wind turned further and increased steadily.

Unfortunately we have no storm jib yet. Furling up the jib is not quite the same, as the sheeting points do not allow for such a wide attachment so we use the main with engine support. Between a force 5 and force 7.

still close to shore there are hardly any waves.

We where heading for our first Port, Porto Santo at last directly into the gusts.

But what a surprise. The port entrance is fully sillted up. There are boats in the basin. We wonder how they get in and out.

We will not get to Reggio di Calabri against this wind so we try to find a „bay“.

Simons Einstand!!!

Wisst ihr eigentlich was Hafen bedeutet???

Simons start!

And it was a good one!

But at first, I took Benni to shore. After breakfast we went with awesome speed towards the cape.4-5 Bft from behind.

Unfortunately we get becalmed by the first high mountain.

Simon worships Neptune by serving him his very own breakfast.

Luckily there is a port close by.

Unfortunately it is not dredged very well. IN(!) the entrance we sight an excavator, on land! luck again, our shallow multi can handle this.

We just get through the narrow entrance.

Long 2m high waves do not really facilitate entering.

After a small break with toast Hawaii we head on.

The wind just turned south (wasn’t it supposed to come from the north all day?).

So, we have to beat up all the way. Direct line 27nm, sailing with tacking a lot 40nm. We still had yesterdays long 2-2.5m high waves. With a wonderful tablet left over from Benni, Simon feels fine again.

Close tot he cape the wind turned so that we decided to run the engine for a little, we still hat 9nm to go and it was already 5pm. The wind died down more to a force 3 and the waves got better to. About 2.5nm from our destination the windspeed increased intensly and right on the nose ;-( Which meant that even with the help of the engine we did not progress anymore.

The big waves lead to the outboard leaving the water again and again and again. This means it also switches off repeatedly. After 20trials we get sick of it and tri sailing towards our port. No chance – so we gladly accept a tow from a French owner. Believe me, it is not easy to get a line across in the big waves. The Jeanneau 40 tows us with 2.8kn.

Occassionally Aquaris speeds up and one one occasion misses the other boat just by luck.

At one stage the line breaks with a big bang & we use the engine at last to make it into shore with our French friends following from behind.

While I control the engine, Simon steers into port. Good teamwork.

Do you know how nice it can be to reach a port?

It is really nice to float in calm water.

We wonder how the engine could be prebvented fgrom exiting the water in hiugh waves. Guess a built in engine is the preferred solution (Comment from the translator Franziska: And this exactly the plan for 2013 when the finances have consolidated a bit…).

In port we pass at the French boat with a bottle of wine, to drink Martini Rosso, freshen up our French and eat half a meter of Pizza!

Once we’ve written this we fall exhausted into our bunks! No Emails or Skype tonight!

Simon on board!

Simon on board!

We are three üeople for now. Simon arrived well and got also through the train trip from Lamezia.

The crossing to Cantanzano Lido was not really exciting. 3/4 of the time under engine, 1/4 under sail. About 3 years ago the harbour had been completely destroyed by the Scirocco and has not been rebuilt yet.

Benni is leaving tommorow and we are heading for Messina.

Last night we hit the town: The youth and many other people went on the promenade while it has been pretty quiet during the day. We sipped a pint in a Karaoke bar (naturally served with Chips, Peanuts and Olives). The voluntary singers have been superb and it was amazing to see what show the Italians made of a Sunday evening!

Everyone was showing off!

Today we sailed with a Bavaria 46 and 4 Austrians to Castello (or whatever the town is called). We visited the fort and I guess the pix explain that well.
After a pizza (Pizza Service via dinghy to the boat!) and cool beer we enjoy the wonderful view over the bay towards the castello and the adjacent town.

We had already been into port, but once we spotted a small mooring buoy close to the castle, we preferred that for the night.

Endlich einmal ausschlafen!

Finally we get to sleep in! A leisurely cruise gets us to Crotone along beautiful sandy beaches. Despite it beeing sunday, there are hardly any other boats. Crotone has a beautiful castle unfortunately there have been some rather ugly buildings erected right in front of it.

Behind the castle are some impressive manors hidden.

Sunday is washing day. Same for us ;-) We are in a harbour with washing machine and manage to hackle the mooring price down.

Later the very kind harbourmaster, who does not speak a word of English, passes us 2 liter of homegrown wine. Guess we are going to sample this tonight!

Getting up real early 5:00am! Anchor up in Leuca. Good idea, when we get out of the land cover we had a good wind to take us on a beat with about 7knots towards Crotone. About half of the 64nm we had a great sail. Arrival around 16:00pm.

The water is already so warm that it is hardly refreshing. Lovely!

On the whole leg we where passed by no other boat. Only a hazy horizon and unfortunately a lot of plastic trash in the sea. Very sadning to see, as it will still be like this in ten years and might become even worse.

Short from Ciro Marina we are accompanied by some small dolphins. The twon is very unorganised and chaotic. Typically italian style ;-)

Jetzt also doch Geld!

We reached the cape!

Had a wonderful cruise with good wind pushing from behind. We only used the engine for 1.5hr close to the cape. Fantastic harbour! Caves close to Leuca. The port is nice, but we anchored before the quay. Not at last due to this:

At around 11.00 am we reach Otranto, very nice looking harbour. We head towards the coat guard quay and a man waves with the slime line. We moore stern to, as is the habbit down here. The guy hands us the line. Wind is blowing from behind with 3-4Bft. So the aft line needs to be attached fairly quick. The fwd line was fixed rapidly and the fat line the guy hands us is to short ;-( Despite this he shouts: Pull, pull! What a clown!! So I had to extend the line-not a nice business when the wind is pushing from behind.

Once all lines where fix the clown shouts: Coast guard, coast guard!! So we head into the building 12m from us. When I ask the first uniformed if he speaks english, he does a runner ;-) Bizarre. A little later we find the correct officer and he explains that we can stay but have to pay that guy for his help. After all we just wanted to stay for a short while...

When we return to the guy he asks for the boat length and than for 20€ for handling the ropes. So we tell him that we will leave and do not accept it. Still we are happy that he accepts that too.

While doing so, we see the guy and the coast guard officer in discussion. Luckily noone bothers to follow us.

Thats how tourists get ripped off occassionally... but 20€ for two slimy lines is really a rip off & 20€ for 1hour and a shouting clown are equally so.

Leuca is wonderful and we will paddle for a little excursion soon.

Gute Nacht!

Today its national holyday, everyone owning a boat is using it to catch fish, at the most 300m from the shore.

The trip today was partially nice, but the entrance to Brindisi looked terrible. Only industrial plant. So we skipped that.

Anyhow we had some action: At lunchtime we dropped our hook right next to Brindisi airport and went swimming at pleasurable tempertures in water 3.8m deep.

After a short lunch we wanted to proceed further. But, to our surprise, we had no chance to lift the anchor. From above it looked like a sand bottom. Strange! With mask & snorkel we found out that it was in fact rock in a wavy looking form. Behind of theses waves the anchor hooked in thouroughly.

Even vigorous pulling by engine or passing over the anchior did not help & meantime we had 4Bft wind.

Still I had an idea to fix the situation. Let a non floating rope with a slipping sling decent down to the anchor to catch it. Then I pulled while swimming towards the opposite direction & managed to loosen its grip. Stupid enough, it cought the next underwater rock faster than Benni could piull it up. We tried it again from deck, but to no avail. So, once more back in the water & the same procedure again.

Stupid enough the boat strated to drift backwards while I was in the water and only Benni onboard. To make matters wores, there where other boats behind us.

Due to a bit of chance she took a turn back so that I could climb onboard. The engine was off, because it is close to the swimming ladder & the windlass did not work as the battery was dead after all these trials.... This whole operation cost us a full hour!

What did we learn? Well allways use a tripping line with a float attached to the anchor when anchoring in rocks.

We than had a lovely sail with a force 4 towards Cataldo. Then we took the dinghy to shore to enjoy some Pizza. No harbour here ;-) We are anchored on sand this time!

This town is of a different kind, a lot of seemingly Mafiosi style villas abandoned and grown in Where the homeowners murdered 20 years ago?

Anyhow, N8N8!

Außerdem: klassischer Bootsbau in Holz!

This morning we left Mola di Bari around 9.00am. Bevor we had to take the dinghy to the gas station to refuel.

From time to time we had wind, about half of the time we had to run the engine.

At lunch we reached Monopoli (there is actually a real life town with this name!). While the port is not very pretty the town is substantially better. Shortly after heading into town we are greeted by a thunderstorm right above us. Roaring thunder & torrential rain floods the streets.

We shoot a great picture, a groom & bride under a red umbrella escaping the storm towards their white VW beetle. A real classic adorned with red leather seats.

I was faszinated by women driving through town at over 20km/h speed without hitting any walls with their mirrors just beeing 4cm away from these walls (Comment by Franzi: Hey Christopher you are a Macho after all, are you ;-) ??!!)

Apart from that, a lot of classic boatbuilding in town.

After lunch we proceeded to Villanova, a pretty little town with a nice marina. Here we just finished our Pizza and enjoyed some beer while beeing really comfortable in their lounging seats.

Tommorow we head for Brindisi.

DATE 29 May/2011
POSITION Trani/Italy

CREW Christopher&Ann-Kathrin

What a day: The wind has really played its game with us today! We started with 5-Bft in gusts (which was supposed to stay like this all day). In the port of Vieste (btw. With power, freshwatersupply and 2x warm shower!) we tie the first two reefs into the mainsail. This way we headed for the cape. Reaching with 11knots down the waves. I even took a picture of the moment.

ETA for Barletta (nice name, isn't it?) was 15:00hours but at the cape the wind dies completly.

And this after 5Bft! Than it even turns into a headwind while shifting wildly. Unfortunately we still have the waves from the previous wind. We than continued upwind to bBarletta and used the engine for the last two hours, as the missing wind combined with big waves was really uncomfortable.

The port of Barletta turned out to be a shallow ugly industrial harbour. Every time we approached the quay people waved us off. Apart from this we had waves of 1.5m entering the harbour which would have provided for an uncomfortable night (it was about 6pm already).

We decided to head for the next port instead. Just after we left port it breezed up to 5Bft and we quickly got nasty waves. Running 8-8.5kn we where in Trani (not really a nice name) in no time.

But what a pretty town. We entered port at full speed only with the main up. Once the sail was doused we went alongside close to some old fishing boats.

There is a great party going on in Trani. Several thousand people smartened up celebrate a fishers festival! Superb ambience with life street music, open cafes and restaurants. Apart from that highheels everywhere. 10 cm is the bare minimum and that despite the cobblestones. Now we head for our bunks, still smelling the fish.

Tommorow we have 21nm to Bari. So just in time for crew change.

Yesterdays crossing was fabulous. Nice 5Bft upwind, later turning into a beam reach. Pretty speedy, with reasonable waves and it was good to have the new installed lifelines. From time to time we where even flying a hull while waves where going over the leeward float.

On this leg I cooked green beans with poatoes. Really not a problem at all, cause the tri is moving hardly. Eating, wedged in while seated in the cockpit is important (see images in the cruising gallery). The only really safe place to lie down was the cockpit for Anni. The rest of the boat is covered in spray.

Unfortunately the wind dropped following nightfall so that we needed to run the engine during the last hour in pitch black night while heading to Tremiti. The night went by quickly while moored to a buoy (we arrived about 11.15pm.)

Todays cruise to Vieste started moderately and ended under main sail only with 4-5Bft from behind doing 8.4kn! The tri is surfing the waves under these conditions and with the waves from behind movements are gentle.

Still when you need to turn into the wind to douse the sails the picture changes ;-)

In Vieste we finally get the chance to recharge both batteries completly (both had been fully drained!)and clean our fresh water tanks, the movements stirred up some old gunk.

Fuel usage: Generator 0.7Liter/hour, Engine 2,7Liter/hour at 5-5,5kn speed.

Late in the evening we arrived in Komiza on the island Vis.

The wind was superb until the last two hours downwind when we needed the engine to get us in port before nightfall.
In Komiza we consulted a doctor who gave a good diagnose: It’s nothing to do with the kidneys, but he believes rather entrapped air, wherever that may be… Two days of tea and toast should get Ann-Kathrin back on track.

What happened today apart from the above? Exterior picture shots (see pix), Lifeline attachment points installed. To do this everything needs to be well sealed with Sikaflex. Nasty stuff when the one week old cartridge is half way dried up andit becomes a struggle to get it on the threads. It goes everywhere else instead.

Grrrrrrrr!

Tommorow we plan to go to Lastovo.

Ps.: Now we reached the stage of becoming landsick instead of seasick when going ashore…

You where surely surprised why we did not post any news last night: Having left Silba (?? seems not to be quite correct, as Silba is far to the north of Dugi Otok) we sailed through the narrows between Dugi Otok and Cornati.

We passed a Restaurant where we almost qualified for a free lunch, „Aquarius“ was it's name and our trusty boat is called „Aquaris“.

But instead of this we sailed hard upwind with about 8 knots towards Kravaljacica, a small, but poch looking settlement of about 20 houses. Seemingly a weekend retreat & completly offline. So we where offline too. They did not even have electric power. We dropped the hook once more. Few seconds later the national park ranger arrived and asked for the mooring dues.

Later we replace the anchor with a mooring buoy, seems like the anchor had slipped.

In the morning Anni feels already a lot better and we pass the 8kn barrier. 8.4kn. Thats how we like it. We raised the mainsail while still on the mooring buoy, beared a little away and took off. Still, one needs to be careful, as the boat accelerates fast and, due to the small rudder, one gains full control after a few seconds. Had a kind of tight fit with the shore due to this. Then, up goes the jib.

To pass through the Cornaties with 6.5kn while going upwind is just perfect. Unfortunately the pix do not get this across to well. One only sees boring hills without anything on top. Early risers are awarded a free playing field though-charterers are still well asleep. Later we are joined by a Bavaria 40 sailing out of a bay.

Two boats, and it's a race ;-) The wind died down to almost nothing 1-2 Bft and the 40 gets becalmed. We gain 100m but hit the calm too. Few seconds and they gained 500m on us. Bummer!

All over sudden we have 4 Bft once more and in a snap the fans of the booze cruise are well behind us. You just have to use the gusts in a similar manner to the Alster in Hamburg.

Those sitting under a giant Bimini do not notice windshifts though.. ;-)

We reached Smokvica V in 2.5 hours and I believe the images are speaking for themselves. (Btw. Franzi's camera seems to take the sun hard from time to time, thats when the pictures turn pink.)

Late afternoon we sailed to the southeastern anchorage of Zirje. Shortly thereafter it breezes up to 7Bft. That's at least what the wind instrument tells us.

Anyway, as we had the sails doused quickly, this did not pose a problem to us.

For all sailing people: I noticed in the stronger wind yesterday that I had mixed up the topping lift and main halyard. The more stretchy rope meant a saggy mainsail luff. Now I swapped that and all seems fine.

Now we are anchored as indicated.

Dann gehts weiter...

At last we get to sleep in-no wind this morning. The anchorage is all ours apart from a fisherman joining us for about an hour (see pix). Breakfast with eggs and an improvised egg holder improvised from a platic cup.

1 1/2 engine hours later we arrive in Sali. First time since Cervignano we get freshwater, the fwd tank for the "bathroom" sink is empty. Best of all it's free! We hook up to recharge too. Than we continue further.

After leaving the anchorage we head towards Zadar. Once more with light wind. Still the last 1.5hrs towards Zadar we can enjoy a very nice beam reach. Heavy ferry traffic in port. The ferries moore stern to and drop the stern ramp. Hardly any place left in the port in this case. After an seemingly endless discussion with a guy from the marina in Zadar (he wanted to charge 100€ for 2-3 hours we head for a spot right in front of the fishing vessels (not a problem at all). We are not allowed to leave the boat alone though, when moored in this location , as Anni is still sick in her bunk this is not posing a problem either. Unfortunately she suffers really, 30degree centigrade, hardly a breeze and little swell.

I take a long stroll through town and try to find pretzel sticks and juice for her. A brief shower and the super clean streets turn into a slide, must be the Pollen on polished stone. Like ice on the streets at 30 degrees. There is more ice-but this in the hands and mouths of tons of school kids ;-)

Between impressive old and astoninglishly ugly new buildings there are lots of historic excavations to be seen.

Around 5pm we pass the bridge of Zedrelac. While the chart talks of 18m a sign says 16.5m. Quite a squeeze with 15m airdraft. Especially with 2kn current on the nose and 5 trawlers at full speed behind us. To the left we spot very dark clouds (=Thunderstorm). Just about in time we done our foul weather gear and make it almost in time to dodre the weather into our bay for tonight.

Regarding beating to windward. We had a two hour beat from Zadar to the islands today (6nm). When not trimmed perfectly we have atacking angle of about 120 degrees. we could force her to point higher, but a bit of ease on the sheets pays really well. 3-4Bft of wind allows up to 7.3kn and that, with a well loaded boat.

The rudder balance is wonderful, even a model boat servo could handle the tiller (hardly any pressure). A little bit of weather helm is easily achieved without a lot of trimming.

7:15am – another early rise provides for a sail with favourable winds to Ilovik: Very pretty village, churchbells greet for our arrival. Btw. Two other German vessels on the mooring buoys.

Later today. Ann-Kathrin serves her own breakfast to Neptune ;-( Hardly waves, little wind. Possibly it's her kidneys which got a bit cold the other day.

We continue towards Silba town quay. Ann-Kathrin trys to get better while I buy some tasty food in the super market. Lunch with fried eggs, ham and salad served on toast. Tasty, but not for somone feeding Neptune …

We sail through the narrows between MOLAT & IST. 3-4Bft and about 7kn upwind. Max 7.3kn!

16:00pm-beating up to town, anchoring and we pay a visit to town with the dinghy.

The quiet small village is very tidy and the only bar in town is jam packed with charter crews drinking beer despite the heat.

17:00pm we head on to MOLAT. Pretty good wind. The tri has sufficent sail area above 3Bft. But below this, we really wish for a large screacher or gennaker. The little spi from my own boat, a „Verthenskreuzer“ seems almost ridiculous but works despite this with a tad bit of improvisation.

At nightfall we drop the hook in the bay neighbouring Molat. We rig a stern line too. A little later another boat arrives. We where the first on though. Looks like a party tonight.

The anchor windlass hooked up to generator and battery works flawlessly by now. Unfortunately our laptop charges really slowly.

Tommorow we want to sail to Zadar.

Left early this morning, unfortunately we were becalmed for almost the whole leg of today. No wind. 4 hours motoring and now we are anchored in Krivica Bay at 44°30'03.0"N, 14°29'42.8"E.

DIY ;-) The cabeling to the generator is done. No need for running cables anymore over deck between generator & cabin. I also put a switch between anchor windlass battery and the 12V output of the generator. That way the battery can also stay in place when using the windlass.

By the way, it is entirely possible to solder wires on board if one has a gas powered solder iron & clean cables. Even at 3Bft wind, which, as mentioned above, we had only for a brief while.

Now we took a stroll up on a mountain for a good view & web connection.

Bitte an: cwhitedesign@web.de

8:15 a.m. – morning exercise ;-) up the mast and detangle the wind indicator (=cassette tape) and the wind measure instrument.

Then we head offshore under engine and charge our battery and the laptop with the generator for 2.5 hours.

Good news, the fix of the power problem for the windlass battery works. Just wired it directly to the 12V/8Amp outlet of the generator. Two anchor maneuvers worked beautifully this way.

Sailed with 4.2 kn max past Pula before dropping the hook at °49'13.1"N, 13°50'54.8"E at 4m depth for snorkeling & first underwater pix. (See gallery).

50min further down the coast we dropped the anchor once more in a pretty anchorage 44°46'41 N 13°55'03 E. Unfortunately once more under engine as there is no wind today.

Took the dinghy ashore. Sandy beach and spruce forests provide for a lovely smell. The beauty of nature is occasionally interupted by old bunkers though. It is warm and calm with about 27degree centigrade. Sooo peaceful, just an occasional rabbit and birds singing in the trees.

By the way, this only sounds like holidays ;-) The first half of the day is still work to get the old lady prepped. Today I connected the seawater pump for the galley and worked on the windlass to generator hook up. Boatwork needs always 4x as long at sea than on shore.

Suddenly the outboard stopped. Empty 13 liter tank. The fuel consumption is not perfect…

When running the generator, we have to put up with noise for now, as the hatch needs to be open to radiate the exhaust heat.

Regarding onboard living cooking is like at home ;-) no wind means also no heeling, everything stays put.

19:10 hours – Taking pictures while doging the sunrays reflected into the cabin and writing the logbook entry.

By the way we are also happy to receive your comments via the guestbook, or, more privately, to cwhitedesign@web.de

POSITION South Rovinj/Croatia

CREW Christopher&Ann-Kathrin

After a pleasant crossing to Croatia we went to Rovinj today (unfortunately a lot of motoring). Here we declared our entry into Croatia and bought the cruising permit. Valid for one year, which is a waste, as the boat will only be here for few weeks.
The city is very pretty and situated on a hill which can be almost completely sailed around. On top is the church which we took a closer look at.

We bought fresh food-unfortunately almost everyone speaks German, which spoils a bit the feeling of beeing abroad.

Apart from this we bought a local Internet SIM card and receive now  weatherinfos also when in remote anchorages.

Regarding yesterday evening: Dalja is looking quite pleasent from afar,  but close up most of the impressive houses are not in a good state of repair. We took the dinghy ashore for a short visit.

Overnight a Bora with 5Bft. had been announced but it did not arrive so we had a good nights sleep.

After swimming we had scrambled eggs & toast.

Unfortunately the battery of the anchor windlass failed on us half way through the 45m of chain so that I had to connet it to the new 100Amp battery. The new windlass can not be operated by hand.

19:45 hours - we are nicely at anchor just south of the ACI Marina Rovinj and look forward to an early start tommorow to make some way (if we get enough wind). By the way, the sunset photo has been made few minutes ago.

This short but wonderful message reached Franzi today from the boat:

"...Hello, left about 10am this morning, direction Croatia. Nice anchorage in Dalja. Tommorow we are going to Rovinj to check in. Running 6-6.7kn at 3.5Bft windspeed! Super nice performance. More from Rovinj. Kind regards, A.+C...."

Yesterday we went for shopping to Trieste, but it was all in vain (all shops with the exception of food stores are closed on monday.) This is Italy or, how Page (=Aquaris previous owner) would call it: SERENDIPITY

Anyway, today we went again, bought some stuff but did not get what we had set out for (rigging blocks!)

Travelling with Page and Jan is always funny, their car, an aging Jeep seems to have a sensor defect which leads a "little ghost" to beep intermittandly, or from time to time permananently ;-)

This time it took us 35min to Trieste. Beeep!

To make good for this, it is nice and warm and the snowcapped Alps greet over the horizon.

Tommorow we will head directly for Croatia, after refuelling and picking up a second gas bottle.

Morgens: Dauerregen!

Morning: It rains cats & dogs! Good opertunity to check on watertightness – not bad for a vessel of this age. A little bit of Vaseline on the portlight gaskets works a treat!

Good news, the old depth sensor works flawlessly with the new display unit. We can see depth, speed and GPS waypoint bearing in the cockpit as well as on the notebook. All via NMEA.

A bit later Franzi leaves for her loooooong drive to Hamburg.

12:00-Breakfast with bolied eggs and tea ( we inaugurate the stove!)

12:45-The big clean up starts and soon enough we have a cosy & tidy cabin.

Morning: Franzi has arrived and following the big powwow we start the shopping session (while we had to Ikea, Franzi & Page get LPG and spares).

At Ikea we get cooking appliances and a brightly yellow (Anni calls it Kiwi green) umbrella (see pix)

Mastcheck (see gallery)

The generator installation has been completed & works satisfactory. We also replaced two old Plexiglas windows with polycarbonate windows. The would have not survived wave impact. The later work did of course not show up on the list of planned work.

We use the last daylight for completing the gas installation (how lovely will be a cup of hot tea the next morning!!)

Following a dinner invitation with pasta and red wine we fall into a nearly narcotic sleep.

Unterwasseranstrich in 1,25Std gestrichen!

Following the long trip to Cervignano, it is the day of truth at last, launching day!

New bottom paint in 1.25 hours.

Getting ready for the crane at 13.00 hours:

12:45-Another check on the seacocks reveales that one of the toilet valves is shot ;-( We have a spare which was destined for another location. Unfortunately it is of 1 ½” and not of 1 ¼” as needed.

13:10-We manage to remove the seacock but, to bad, the throughull parts from the boat as well. Whole in the hull ;-( All shops are closed. Siesta time. No crane operation. Franzesco the crane operator is crossed!

13:20-Frustrating! Still Janet cheers us up with some wonderful sandwiches & crisps. Very American & tasty!

13:35-Franzesco returns with a suitable adapter & throughull. Where it got it is beyond us. We can even choose between new seacock or adaptor.

After refitting seacock and adapter we even survive the challenging crane operation. That crane has a looooong reach ;-)

We head to the mooring position, wonderful spot and ideal for prepping the boat. Despiote all the bought food we can not cook, the LPG bottle is empty and can only be refueled on Monday.

To drive around on an Italian Friday evening to find a replacement seems impossible.

Later we get invited by Janet & Page to have Pizza and wine with them. Slightly sunburnt & and really tired we fall into a deep sleep.

Ps: The new dinghy is fabulous & really fast with the 2.2 hp outboard. Real fun!

Christopher  and his sister left around 18:00hours in Hamburg, Germany and are heading to Franziska's parents to pick up more gear. Tommorow is the first big event for them, they meet Aquaris for the first time in reality.

Hope she will be a good home for the next few weeks to them.

Luckily all the boat papers arrived on time, now there is only a rigger required to approve the rig from the insurance standpoint. Fingers crossed we'll find one!
